Welcome To The London Symphony Chorus

The advent of Simon Rattle as Music Director of the London Symphony Orchestra at the beginning of our 2017-18 season, heralds a year in which we will be performing with the world’s most celebrated conductors, in a series of concerts with the LSO that culminate in Beethoven “Missa Solemnis”, widely regarded as the composer’s most challenging piece. Under the leadership of Simon Halsey, the London Symphony Chorus has, in recent years, grown from strength to strength. His appointment as LSC Chorus Director and Choral Director of the LSO reflects the importance the Orchestra places on choral activity.

The close relationship between LSO and LSC is demonstrated in the programme of work that the 2017-18 season contains. Immediately on his appointment as Music Director, Simon Rattle conducts two performances of Berlioz “The Damnation of Faust”. This is followed in November with Bernstein Symphony No. 3 (“Kaddish”) conducted by Marin Alsop, a staunch advocate of Bernstein’s work. Liszt “A Faust Symphony” is conducted by Antonio Pappano, Music Director of the Royal Opera House. No December is complete without a festive celebration and Choral Christmas is conducted by our own Chorus Director, Simon Halsey. Bernstein returns again in two concert version performances of his “Wonderful Town” conducted by Simon Rattle. We continue as the choral element in “Genesis” also conducted by Simon Rattle in early 2018. The ladies of the chorus will be the “Sirenes” in Debussy “Nocturnes” conducted by Francois-Xavier Roth and then Semyon Bychkov conducts Mahler Symphony No. 2 (“Resurrection).

Gustavo Dudamel will lead the Los Angeles Philharmonic in performances (one at the Barbican and the other at the Philharmonie in Paris) of Beethoven Symphony No. 9 and Bernstein’s “Chichester Psalms”. Our choral year with the LSO ends with Beethoven “Missa Solemnis” under Michael Tilson Thomas, Vice-President of the LSC, a fitting climax to a challenging and very exciting year of singing.
