Mark ‘Mr T’ Thompson

An energetic and dynamic performer engaging young minds with the power of spoken word

*

Mark Thompson was born and bred in South-East London of Anglo-Jamaican heritage. He originally trained as an actor, appearing on stage and screen, including a national tour of Listen to your Parents by Benjamin Zephaniah.

He first stumbled into a spoken word gig in Brixton in 2003 and has since won numerous events and awards (including the UK’s biggest ever online slam ‘Manorlogz’ Televised in 2010) and performed at venues fromTthe Albany Theatre, Olympic Park and Hackney Empire in London, to the Blues Room in Johannesburg.

A qualified teacher, Mark has worked as a facilitator and workshop leader with students from eight to adult, exploring the themes of his own work from culture, identity and history to love and romance. Working with both students at risk of exclusion and those earmarked as gifted and talented, he has explored poetry as an art form in the classroom, engaging young minds with the power of spoken word, enabling them to better express themselves and more fully understand others.

A chapter of his first collection, Mixed Messages (self published in 2009 in print and on CD by his Cultural Chameleon Press) is dedicated to the story of his wife Sarah’s successful search for a bone marrow donor. Mark has volunteered with the African Caribbean Leukaemia Trust ever since, regularly representing the organisation as the ACLT’s official poet.

An energetic and dynamic performer, Mark also promotes and hosts events, helps run the Poetry In London Facebook page and has a second collection of his writing nearing completion.
