Conference of the Birds

Conference of the Birds

A stunning performance including poetry, music, shadow and rod puppetry. Inspired by a classic allegorical Persian poem, The Conference of the Birds tells the tale of how the birds of the world met to find a King, wise Hoopoe takes them on a journey of discovery to find the all knowing Simo`rgh, who would help them find their King.

Artists Nick Makoha and Drew Horley have been working during Autumn 2011 with with a small group of EBD students (years 8 & 9) at Wandle Valley school to create lyrics and soundtrack as part of the project, while between January and June 2012, storyteller Sally Pomme Clayton has working with community group, No Panic, based in Sutton. This is a group affected by depression, anxiety and panic attacks, during the workshop sessions have written poems and stories that follow the thematic structure of The Conference of the Birds and that will be performed by them at the two events in July.

The show was created by local and national arts organisations, funded by the Arts Council England, working with Sutton school pupils and community groups, bringing together a wide variety of skills and experiences, ages and abilities. The result is a unique piece of theatre suitable for all ages, which takes its audience on their own fantastic journey of discovery.
